Reframing Unconscious Bias

Unconscious Bias is the natural tendency for people to make quick judgments about others based on social stereotypes.

When a person is on the receiving end of unconscious bias, they may experience negative (and false) assumptions from others, based on attributes like their age, appearance, gender, accent or even how they are dressed.

When we understand the impact of unconscious bias, and what can done to mitigate its effects, it can make all the difference.

Unconscious bias training is essential to help you create an inclusive environment in your school or organisation, so everyone feels they belong, are seen and heard,

Creating an inclusive and diverse setting, means you value your team members’ unique experiences and perspectives. However, unconscious biases can get in the way of achieving this.

Why do this training?

  • Almost 3,000 people in the UK were surveyed in a poll for the Guardian on their experiences with unconscious bias. People of colour stated they were more likely to have negative encounters than their white counter-parts reported.

  • A recent study the University of Sussex, found the unconscious biases of educators could be linked to the underperformance of students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Implicit stereotypes and associations can affect anything from mapping out your curriculum, to recruiting new staff; and connecting with parents, to creating a culturally diverse school ethos. That’s why unconscious bias training has become crucial to many schools’ diversity and inclusion strategies.

This course explores the meaning of unconscious bias, the impact on mental health, and ways to overcome unconscious biases to create more open, inclusive, and effective communication within your school or organisation.
